About

The name`s Bas Hesen, and I am a Dutch freelance animator. I mostly specialize in all aspects of digital character animation, from modeling and rigging to animating and rendering. Also custom tool creation for maya in MEL is part of my portfolio. I recently finished work on my own rigging tool.

Though I graduated in 2008 from the academie of arts st. Joost, I feel like I can never learn enough about the medium I`m working in. It is my philosophy that only a deep and fundamental understanding of the medium can lead to creatively uninhibited work. The past year I learned a lot about rigging and scripting in MEL. I also picked up a book on Renderman, which vastly increased my understanding on image synthesis with renderman complient renderers. As I keep reading the book you will also find tests on this site of custom shader-writing.
Not only the technical, but also the theoretical side to animation has my interest. Through introductionary books on “the theory of visual perception” and “semiotics” I can make more sense on exactly how images and storytelling work on different levels.
I am looking forward to applying all that I have learned in future project. So please contact me for any artistic proposals.

On this site I try to give you an impression of my yourney as an independant animator. Besides portfolio pieces you will also find visual experiments.
